Sales of digital cameras have been down for some time now. Why? Because most people are content with the photos they can take with their phones. After all, we carry our smartphones with us about everywhere. Taking a camera along is just something else to remember. (Or something easily forgotten.)
Add to this the fact that the quality of photos your mobile device captures has improved dramatically in the past several years. The result is practically everyone has a something that will take photos with them all the time – and what’s more, they’re doing just that.
One new start-up that recognized the power of cellphotos is Instagram. In eight months, the company has amassed just under 5 million users; and that number is growing by about a million more each month. Instagram is a cool photo-modification app that lets you add special effects to your pics, and then share them with others or on Facebook. Obviously, people like it.
But there’s a larger lesson here. Photos snapped with cellphones have become an integral part of sharing and communicating. If you have any doubts about this, consider that roughly 3 billion new photos are uploaded to Facebook each month. Images are how people share what’s happening in their lives today.
So here’s the challenge for your brand: Can you come up with a way to integrate photo sharing into your social marketing strategy? Something that people will think is fun, simple and easy to use? If you’re not seeing a picture of that in your mind, we’d love to help.
