You’ve heard about AdBlock right? According to their website, it lets you ‘Surf the web without annoying ads!’ And who doesn’t want more of that? Plus, it’s free. So you’d have to think if there were ever a product that would spread like wildfire via social media – it would be this one, right? Friends telling friends and all that.
Oops, maybe not. Adblock has announced that they’re going to be buying advertising to promote their brand. The company founder posted a video asking fans to donate money to help ‘bring AdBlock to the world.’ The company wants to run conventional digital ads and also buy a billboard in Times Square.
They’ve raised over $55,000 thus far. But as AdAge recently pointed out – you have to wonder if AdBlock has looked into the price of outdoor media lately. The going rate for an outdoor board at 1 Times Square is currently between $3,000,000 and $4,000,000 per year.
So we now have this year’s leading candidate for ‘most ironic story’. And there’s something else to keep in mind. Advertising works. There really is no substitute for a smart media spend. Especially one that’s integrated with your content generating and social marketing tactics.
You have to spend money to make money. Even today.
